Day 24- askROCCO Boot Camp 11/3/2006

I haven't been creating entries because my Boot Campers haven't been coming to the blog like they are supposed to. This as mundane as it may feel is an important part of your training. You need to journal what is happening to your body and mind in order to know how far you've come and see how much further you will need to go. This is about holding your self accountable. So let's get blogging.

Day 20 - askROCCO Boot Camp 10/25/2006

Well, this is where people that really give a shit about themselves and walk the walk begin to see progress. We began this journey with 110 participants and now it's down to 35. It seems that people will spew excuses and then when you take away everything that can hold them back...time, money, not knowing how to, it really only comes down to one thing. Attitude! For all you Boot Campers that are sticking it out, the benefits will follow. You are all showing great progress in the proper technique of the exercises. That's really great. Keep it up!

Time Under Tension vs. Explosive lifts

Hi Rocco a quick question. I've been doing research on structual strength training and functional strength training.
In regards to structual strength there are many professional opinions that state time under tension training is more effective then ballistic exercises. The National Strength Training Association believes that time under tension recruits more muscle fibres as there is less outside forces involved so the muscles have to work harder with the increase in resistance. I am reading Supertraining by Mel Seff and it is his belief that explosive training is more benifical for structual strength as more neurons are fired to recruit more muscle fibres. In regards to hypertrophy training which would you believe is a more effective method.
Cheers Ian. From down under

Time under tension is always going to recruit more muscle fibers. Mel Seff is nuts. For hypertrophy’s sake, you need to recruit more muscle fibers to increase size. If you recruit only 10 muscle fibers, than only 10 can grow to be big and strong but if you recruit 100 than you increase the capacity to become even bigger and stronger. Now the only way that you can recruit more and more muscle fiber is by making damn sure that they are exhausted. The only way you can get that exhaustion is by beating the shit out of the muscle over time. So, with that said, do you think that doing quick and jerky movements will exhaust that muscle sufficiently to become big and strong? No one actually gets strong from those movements, they just get better at doing them by practicing them over and over and over again. It looks pretty cool but does not have anything to do with structural and functional strength. Keep up the good work. I’ll see you sometime down under. Hey just a quick question. Do you know many people that may want to understand weight training and exercise down in your neck of the woods. I wouldn’t mind bringing my askROCCO Live Seminars/shows to Australia.

Baby steps for the bad back

Question: My husband injured his back about 5 years ago. Now he cannot walk but a short distance and cannot stand for any length of time. He has gained considerable amount of weight during this time. He is 6ft. and weighs approximately 340 lbs. and is 59 years old. He also has an irregular heartbeat and is on blood thinners. He wants to lose the weight but does not know what to do. We have tried to eat differently but without exercise it is not helping. Please tell me how to help him because I don't want to lose him to this weight problem. He has a lot of trouble breathing also.

Answer: This is a real bummer, because I don’t think that I can help either. I do have several ideas but they’re only suggestions and remember that I am not a doctor and will never pretend to be. One thing to remember is if you are not expending calories you do not need to take that many in. Your best bet would be to go to a licensed dietician and get the correct calorie intake for him. Second, if he can only walk a short distance keep him walking, let him walk until he can’t, let him sit and rest, then get his ass up again. Everyday push a little harder, nothing too crazy just a little more each day. It will feel like an eternity but I’ll bet within six months he’ll be walking better and feeling better. The fat won’t come off that fast but you need to get to the starting line if you want to finish the race. Let’s get your man to the starting line and then we’ll figure out how to run the race. This is his journey, stay by his side because he will need a little help along the way. Keep me updated.

Why do you belittle people?

Rocco, since you are an egotistical jackass, can you tell me why you belittle people with your answers? You seem to hide your inability to answer the questions with legitimate technical knowledge.
Jimmy,Western Hills

Answer: I don't belittle people I just want them to get their head out of their asses. Sometimes you have to show a little tough love. I want you and everyone else that's fat to believe in themselves and begin getting healthy and fat just ain't healthy my friend. Keep up the delusion you'll give me more content for my columns. Trainers, unless you have a degree... shut up.

I don't have a question - just wanted to give you a pat on the back about being a personal trainer and not a nutritionist. I am also a personal trainer and find that a lot of trainers do give nutritional advice that they should not be giving. I hear them talk all the time about diet and supplements and so often I just want to say something like "unless you have a degree in nutrition, I think you should keep your mouth shut" So, I just wanted to commend you on that.

Sick of Stupid Excuses...

Hey Rocco-
Just wanted to voice my utter love for your articles and intolerance for the fat and lazy. I couldn't agree with you more.
I once was a fat kid, but educated myself about diet and exercise (and actually abided by what I learned). I am now a svelte, sexy young lady (yes, even you bought me a drink a while back - thanks, btw).
No one has to be fat. The fat love to make excuses for their laziness, when all it really comes down to ignorance and gluttoney. Thanks for putting it to 'em straight. Some call you rude, but 'honest' would be a better description. Keep it comin'.

Fat since birth...What to do?

Fitness Question: I have been fat since childhood. Where does the "there has to be an external reason" come into play here? I have been trying to analyze this for the last 42 years...I am at such a loss for knowing what my next turn is...aerobics, no aerobics, it's in my head, it's not in my head, it's my attitude, it's not my attitude...you know what I mean!! I have 150 lbs to lose and have so much diet garble in my head, I have no idea where to begin. I have cut calories (only) to 500 on protein drinks for a year and lost weight to only see it all rush back plus almost double...not from ice cream either. Weight watchers, I might as well call it Weight Gainers...ugh...I am an intelligent, tenacious woman and will not stop looking for a process until I find one that is healthy and produces real results...Can you please give me honest, advice on losing the fat...thank you.
Cheryl, Parks, Detroit, MI Age 42

Answer: The honest advice is that it is attitude and the need to buy and cook real food. All you’ve ever known your whole life as YOU say is that you’ve been fat. It’s very familiar to you. You have told me that you lost weight (not necessarily fat by the way) when you did protein drink diets and cut your calories way down. Well you lost too much muscle and that just happens to be your furnace that uses a fuel called fat. Going back to what I said about buying and cooking real food. No one these days ever cooks their own food it’s insane. Everyone that’s fat want someone else to do the work; Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, etc. or they want the vitamin supplement companies to make a magical pill to help them burn fat. Give me a break! We need to get you to build muscle to a respectable level in order to help your body burn fat. Let’s start with gaining at least 5 lbs of muscle. If you gain 5lbs of muscle you will expend 350 calories doing absolutely nothing. If you do the math and know that 3500 calories equal a pound of fat then every ten days you could lose 1 lb. Divide 10 into 365days and just by adding 5lbs of muscle you will lose 36.5 pounds of body fat. Let me explain a little of your history to you. You’ve gone on so many diets which has created a yo-yo effect in your body and when you lose weight you also lose muscle along with it. When you lose that muscle the weight you gain back is almost always fat. I’m not in Detroit so I can’t do a body fat ratio test on you but if you can get one from a local fitness professional it will be very helpful to gauge your progress. Portion control is just as important as a training program. If you’re eating real food in the proper portions it is virtually impossible to gain weight. All your portions of concentrated food (meat, pasta, bread, nuts) and high water content food (vegetables & fruits) should not be larger than the top of your hand when you make a fist. Everyone is different and has different size hands and usually it is proportionate to the size of their body. So to sum this up: Gain Muscle, cook and eat real food, and use portion control. Do not go on any more diets and keep that tenacious attitude.

Why call it "Fat People are Stupid"... because its true.

Fitness Question: You could be a great help to people who are overweight and suffering, but I think you're the one who needs a bit of an attitude adjustment. "fatpeoplearestupid.com" ? Why name it that? Are you really under the impression that being fat has something to do with your powers of intellect? You are so full of yourself that nothing can penetrate that veneer of stupidity that surrounds your school of thought You mother must be really proud of you fucko :(
Irene Pearson, NY Age 27

Answer: I love when people who actually don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about write in without doing any research. It just shows how damn stupid you are. Stupid has nothing to do with intellect it has everything to do with attitude. Sweetheart, stupid is an attitude and in order to change anything in our life we need to first start the process of changing our attitude. My powers of intellect will never come into play when it comes to your attitude. Just a little side note; have you ever bought supplements because you thought they would help you lose weight? STUPID! Bought a Health Rider because you thought you would use it and didn’t? STUPID! Purchased a treadmill for a couple of grand just to watch everyone use it to hang their dry cleaning? STUPID! I can go on with the stupidity that surrounds my thought process but it would be pointless. When we stop feeling sorry for ourselves and develop an attitude that warrants us to be Americans and the Superpower that we are then and only then will I believe we are not stupid. Do you understand that 65% of us are fucking fat? Only 25 years ago 20% of us were considered fat and you don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. Sorry about your luck. To tell you the truth I don't care if my mother's proud because as long as I'm changing people's lives it shouldn't matter to her.

I couldn't have said it better myself ...

I don't think just fat people are stupid. Most of society has started blaming other people for their own problems. I think fat is a personal problem. Some people may truly have a genetic problem. Not every fat person and it makes me so mad that many fat people say it is not their fault. It is plain and simple. My child has a real disability. He is 8 years old and uses a wheel chair because his body cannot process food into energy like other people so he does not have the muscle capacity to walk. I have studied for a long time on how to get him to gain weight. I try to eat the same way. Not that I need to gain or lose wait. It is proper eating that makes your body do exactly what it needs to. Gaining, losing, or maintaining weight. Most people do not have the discipline to eat well. Not that we eat roots and seeds. We do not eat out all the time; we eat fruit, vegetables, chicken, hamburger, and many other things. We chose to eat differently. We use more organic foods. It is ! still as good. It is not that hard to eat healthy. I think the American disability acts association should not allow morbid obesity to be any kind of disability. It is there F*#$@$% fault. My son was born the way he is and it makes me so mad when I go to park in a handicapped parking spot and someone who is fat gets out of their car and takes that spot. Someone even worse off than my son could have really used that spot or there at least would be enough room for the people who really need those spaces not just fat people. Another thing is that when my son gets older he will not be able to work like everyone else and will really need Social security disability. Now can someone really say that it is o.k. to give someone a check because they have medical problems because they became to fat or give them a check because of real disability that they did not cause. I think it is wrong from a mother who has a son who is truly disabled and has to deal with these things everyday. And!
no, I am not a fat person. Yes, I know fat people. I see the way they eat and the way I eat. There is a difference that causes people to become larger. And, I know people who are on diets they are being lead wrong. Fat people should do their own research and find out what is out there and what they can do to really lose weight. You should eat breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, supper, and maybe another snack. All small meals and healthy choices in snacks not full of unhealthy fats and things. Look up the ingredients and what they are sometime and make your own healthy decisions on what you eat. Think for yourself once and a while and stop blaming others. Don't always depend on what others say. It's your choice, make it.

Just because she fat doesn't mean she's angry

My question isn't really about
fitness, but I know this woman
who is overweight. I try desperately to be nice to her and treat her as an equal. But I can't understand why she is angry every time I see her, I find myself avoiding her lately because of her attitude what is one to do? Even though
I can't help her.

Answer: There are some people out there that are not happy with living in their own skin. Many fat woman are that way because of some external reason that manifests itself into malfeasance. She hates her life maybe she’s going through a divorce or her husband cheats on her because she is fat, maybe her children are drug addicts or maybe she just hates her job. I don’t necessarily believe this anger comes from being overweight I think their really are outside forces driving this behavior. One thing that I do every time a situation like this arises I suggest confront in a semi-subtle way why she seems so angry. Or another thing I always do is invite them out for a drink after work get them liquored up and they usually spill the beans why they have so much anger and hate. I hope this helps.

Muscle building not aerobics has residual calorie expenditure

When you talk about exercise and weight loss, most people will equate aerobic exercise with weight loss, burning calories or expending calories and most of these individuals don't understand that to be very effective, or more efficient at fat loss, weight training or strength training and building muscle is far more effective at producing the greatest gains in fat loss. So, it is very important to establish a muscle building and resistance training workout to when you are considering a weight loss plan. The reasons for this are that, for every pound of muscle that you gain you can expend 45 to 75 calories at rest. In exercise science it has been known that a woman performing aerobic exercise only expends calories when that individual is actually doing the aerobic exercise. It has no residual effect, only muscle building, or the hypertrophy of muscle has the residual effect on consistent calorie expenditure.

More praise for Fat Kills: A Special Report

It was awesome! It reinforced a lot of the same ideas I have about health and fitness especially the importance to focus on losing fat, not weight. Too many people believe cutting calories will get them in shape without realizing exercise is the only way to get firm. There was a lot of great advice in here particularly your attack on the complacent attitude of fat people. The report does a wonderful job of motivating and forcing people to take responsibility for their actions. You did a bang up job, I really enjoyed it.

Thanks,

Skinny people have problems too...

Question: Hey Rocco,
First of all, I would like to ask you what my best bet would be to gain some weight, I know this may be an odd question, but realistically, I am a skinny piece of shit. I am 5'9 and my weight varies from 135 to 150, and no matter what I do, I don't gain any weight, I even have tried lifting weights and exercising, but my metabolism is extremely high. Is there anything I can do to put on some weight, the healthy kind, of course. My goal is to be about 170 or 180 of pure muscle or close to it. As is right now, I am scrawny, but still muscular for my size. What should I do?
Mike Gutknecht, Kentucky, 19 years old

Answer: Mike, it's really not that odd of a question. Just because I want to rid the world of fatness doesn't mean that skinny people don't have problems also. The most important thing that you need to know is that you are still really young. I know you may think 19 years old is getting old, trust me it isn't. I had somewhat of the same problem when I was 19. I just couldn't put the weight on. Every seven years your body changes so when you turn 21 it will become a little easier for you to gain some weight A former Mr. Universe, Bill Pearl told me, the most important thing to do is eat a shit load of calories especially if you metabolism is fast. So I went from eating 3000 calories a day to eating 5000 and then 8000 calories a day. The weight came on at a slow pace but it did come on and because of the intensity of my workouts most of it came on as muscle. You need to up your calories and increase the intensity of your workouts.

Weight training to burn more fat

I get this question associated with the topic of aerobic vs. weight training so much from my readers I decided to answer it on my blog.

For todays youth exercise more important than getting that "A"...

I was discussing with a friend of mine, just today, about kids and young adults and how the American population concentrates more on academics than on fitness and physical conditioning and I recently did a seminar at a high school and was very surprised and concerned about what is going on with the youth of America. It's just insane! It drives me crazy! When I was young or most of us in the generation between Y and X and P and Q and all that kind of stuff, we mostly were not that stressed. We had to do homework, we had to get good grades, we had to do this or that, but it didn't seem like there was so much pressure on the academics of it all. I come to find out; there really is no more pressure on the kids today. There's no more than we had when we were young. It just comes to be that the kids today and the youth of today can't handle the stresses or the pressures. They're not strong enough. They are actually a very weak generation. Why? Because there's no balance, absolutely no balance in what they do. Adults keep harping on - get good grades, you've got to get good grades, but they don't offer the positive stress relief of going out and running, or playing baseball, or actually doing something that can help to counterbalance, or to counteract the negative stress or negative effects of trying to get that A or get that B. You know what; we don't necessarily have to constantly get the A. Let's worry more about the kids, or the youth, being able to go out in the world and be able to form sentences and be able to work hard and take on responsibility. Kids today are taking Ritalin, like it's candy.

Youth and children are just like dogs, I don't care what anybody says. I have two dogs here, Bosco and Snoopi. One's a beagle and ones a Strattfordshire terrier mixed with a lab and a breeder told me when I got them, that they need 45 minutes of exercise, vigorous exercise every day. If they don't get those 45 minutes of vigorous exercise every day, they are the most ornery, pains in the butt dogs in the world. So, if my dogs need the exercise, and they don't listen to me when they don't get that exercise It takes me four times of calling my dog instead of one time. The same kind of things happens with kids and children if they're not exercising. There is all this pent up energy in them. They need a release. They need that release - and you keep piling on, piling on, piling on, and piling on all these other things. You have to get that good grade, be in the glee club, you have to do this and be pillar of society, which we all do want that, but it's not the most important thing. There needs to be that balance, where you can release all of that pent up energy. Adults just don't have stress, and we're even getting worse and worse at dealing with it also. So, exercise for the youth of today, is actually more important because it also helps to breed or to help to continue their healthful ways and kids are more productive when they've exercised and they don't have 14 thousand things on their head.

Our Bodies are the greatest adaptive mechanisms

Our bodies are the greatest adaptive mechanism, or machine, in the world. It's unbelievable to see how, if the body works, it becomes more efficient at doing work. It actually becomes stronger and the body becomes more adept at doing a certain skill. The more we do it the better we get at it. That's the way the body is made. Just as the body adapts to work and getting stronger, it actually adapts to becoming lazy. So the lazier we get, or the less work we do, the better at doing less work we become. We become very efficient at it, we become so great at it that we don't want to do any work. If that's the case, and you go to the other end of the spectrum, then in order to get back into shape it is the longest, hardest road that you can possibly have to take. If you haven't done much work, then you have to build yourself back up to be able to become average again, in average health, in average fitness. That's why, if this does happen - if we do become overweight, and we do become a very weak, lazy, unhealthy person, we need to have the mental toughness and the mental commitment - and not only be within ourselves - but we need to come outside ourselves and kind of guide ourselves.

So many people say "look within and grab yourself and pick yourselves up by the boot straps. Sometimes, we can't really look within without getting outside ourselves. When we look from the outside and see what we are, we usually don't like what we see and that can enable us to get the mental toughness and the inspiration to do something better and be healthier and to actually be a little more productive with our lives.

A Stupid trainer in Chicago...

I have taken some of the questions I get at askrocco.com and will be answering them here to help you readers sort the stupid stuff out.

Fitness Question: I have been working with personal trainer for 7 weeks through a fitness club. I paid for 24 sessions up front, meeting 2 times a week. My trainer has cancelled on my six times, usually doing this by text messaging me an hour or two before we are to meet. He never apologizes. Also, when we do meet he text messages people on his phone during our session, and always puts me on the treadmill for the last 20 minutes, sometimes walking away and leaving me there. I pay a lot of money for these sessions, but I am not sure if this is normal. I am too nervous to confront him about it.
Erin, Chicago

Answer:Your trainer is a friggin' idiot! No, it is not normal! If you want me to confront him I will. This guy is so taking advantage of you emotionally and financially and you're not getting the results you wanted because he's never there. What a piece of shit. There are a couple of lessons to be learned here. 1) never pay for more than a weeks worth of sessions in advance. I only let my client pay for three at one time. Never should you pay for 24 sessions up front. The reason why trainers do this is to keep you hooked and you won't walk away from them if they still owe you sessions. This guy's a con-artist. If a trainer says "well that's my policy" tell him or her to go to hell. 2) Just because someone says they're a trainer doesn't really mean they are. He should never leave your side, unless his bladders going o burst all over the floor. Then again he should have taken a pee before your session. This gut is so lame. Don't be nervous, it's your money. Tell him that you don't want to train with a piece of shit like him anymore. Or better yet hand him this e-mail. Let him call me and I'll be more than happy to tell him where to go.

Praise for Fat Kills: Special Report

I did read Fat Kills and of course it was fun to read because you just tell it like it is. I was impressed with the things that you had to say about individuality when it comes to health and fitness--especially when you referred to women and how we are all not meant to be a size 4 but that doesn't mean that we do not also have the ability to be sexy. I especially thought that it was GREAT how you said that sexy comes from within. I think that it is a very important thing to get across to women, and I think it's great coming from a person that we would least expect to hear that from, a personal trainer. I think the overall message that you send to women about muscle and how important it is to maintain and improve their health is so needed(I also read your column in Cin Weekly and you are always focusing on that)
I also liked that you talked about fat as a symptom of being out of balance. You didn't JUST talk about "stop shoving food in your mouth" although that is funny and true, but you addressed how it is robbing people of being healthy in all aspects of life.
Lastly, I want you to know that I will refer to your report often on my journey toward becoming un-fat (well...I'm not THAT fat haha) when I need an adjustment.
Thanks!

Sexual Dysfunction can be helped with real exercise.

I was discussing the contents of a chapter of my next book with some friends of mine just the other day and it came to me that this chapter is something that is near and dear to my heart because I really, sincerely believe that sexual dysfunction is a part of self loathing that we don't necessarily like ourselves and don't want to perform at our best or our true potential. I was laughing, because I was discussing this with two clients of mine that are women, who are very much women, and they talked to me and asked why I was beating up on the whole sexual dysfunction thing as being not masculine and whatever. They decided to talk to me about what if men have this problem because of medical reasons, or because they had a bad prostate, or something like that. I almost died laughing, because that's exactly what I'm trying to say, if someone has a medical problem like their prostate is too large then I think that it's they're own fault and they need to take responsibility for what has happened and take the necessary precautions and not blame this problem on something else and all of a sudden they want to mask this problem with some pill. It's like someone enabling an alcoholic and masking some discrepancy or putting make-up or band-aid over a freckle or something that is part of them. I really think that the women are wrong in saying that and trying to cover up. Sometimes women do try to cover up for men, or for their man, and give credence for using these products.

A little scam I heard about today: Trimlife weight loss products

Today a client of mine received a package from Trimlife weight loss products. She never ordered anything from Trimlife. It said she purchased the products and there was a credit card number attached to the purchase. She called up Trimlife and told the woman on the phone that she never ordered the product and the response was condescendingly poised that she definately ordered the product online and a specific credit card was entered. When she told the idiot over the phone that it wasn't her credit card number the woman asked for her new number. Thank goodness my client was smarter than the average bear, first she didn't want the product, second, there was no way that she would give the number to someone for something she didn't want. Here's the scam.
Things will come in the mail especially supplements, there's your name on the envelope but you didn't purchase the product but it says you did with a credit card, you call up and tell them you didn't purchase this product and they ask you for you credit card number to verify you give it to them and you have just purchased this product for the next year or so for 29.95 every month. If only 1000 people get scammed this company will get $29,995.00 a month for up to two years until the Federal Trade Commision shuts them down. They pay a fine and go back into business selling another stupid weight loss product. If you get a product like this in the mail call them up ask to be taken off their list and refuse to give them a credit card number. This scam used to be used for pool & sistern chemicals.

Walk to buy your beer.

I was thinking about this the other day and just had to write it down. I was dying - on the floor dying. I was thinking how lazy of a society we have become. We have cars that take us to trains, we have buses, we have every kind of transportation that we can fathom to not make us use our bodies to propel us - anywhere. We have the capacity to not have to want to do work so much that we will wait in the driveway warming up the car for 10 minutes to drive three blocks to go to the store, beauty parlor, or anywhere - the deli to get a subway sandwhich. We would rather wait 10, minutes warming up the car, drive down, get the thing, when in fact it would take us less than 9 minutes to have walked there bought the thing and come back. So, what makes me laugh, we're always worried about time constraints and we waist time choosing the conveniences that we've been given. I was in Portland, Maine at the Miss Maine USA beauty pageant and was hanging out with some friends of mine, and I know that being a fitness guy, I shouldn't be saying this, but I wanted to go get a six pack of beer, some Amstel light or light beer. I wanted to go get the beer and asked "what do you guys need". And this girl actually got up and said, "Oh, well I'll drive you". And I said, "No, I don't need a drive to walk two blocks!" She said, "Well, it's on the other side of the mall!" I don't know if you've ever been to Portland Maine, but it's not the largest place in the world and the other side of the mall is actually one block and a half. I walked from the Sheraton down to the store where the Amstel light was, because I saw the sign. I came back and it didn't take me 6 minutes to get a six pack of beer, but she was willing to go downstairs, drive the car and drive all the way around - AROUND - the mall and then buy the beer and come back and stop at all the stop lights. I actually challenged her and said, "You know what? Why don't you do that? I'd like to see who gets back faster." I actually felt good. It was kind of brisk out, kind of cold, you had the weather - the outdoors - it was rather nice, actually. It just so happened that it was the day after thanksgiving. The craziest shopping day of the year and they wanted to drive in traffic. I just don't get it. Maybe it's me. Maybe I'm the insane one in all of this. I'm not really sure. I just want the American people to start being responsible for their own health. And here's the moral to the story. If you're gonna go buy beer, it's not the greatest thing in the world, walk to go get your beer. If you're gonna go get a piece of pie, go! OK? But walk to go where you have to go. And if it's 5 blocks, it's 5 blocks. Don't get in your car, sit on your butt and drive and go through the drive thru. I mean, we go through a drive thru, like Burger King or McDonalds, and we'll park the car in the parking lot. I see it happen all the time. It's unbelievable! It is truly unbelievable! And then, they make the garbage can so convenient that you can actually throw out the bag on the drive out! On your drive - way out! I'm just wondering - maybe if you're gonna go to Burger King or a fast food restaurant, maybe you could park the car and get out and walk to the counter. It's not gonna kill you! The fast food may kill you. We would rather go and eat something that could possibly kill us - and I'm not trying to dig on fast food that much, but we would rather not walk and put something in our bodies that could possibly kill us than actually do a little exercise.

If I see on more Bowflex infomercial...

If I see one more commercial for a Bowflex, total gym, or the Fitness System, I think I'm going to explode, because, it's so funny to have to watch this. I'm a fitness enthusiast; a fitness expert and I've been dealing with fitness equipment my whole life. You see the Bally's commercials and all these people that look so great in these commercials and you want to buy because their marketing is saying to you "Oh, you can look like this. This is going to be you, if you buy this product!" I have to tell you, I have never in my life seen - I know more than 500 people that had the thighmaster. Did the Thighmaster work? Absolutely not! Did everyone have one? Absolutely! I saw so many Ab-Rollers and was given probably 10 Ab-Rollers. Did the Ab-Rollers make everybody thin that had it? Absolutely not! Actually, it was pretty hard to do! I've seen thousands of Healthriders in garage sales. If they are the greatest things in the world, why are people selling them at garage sales? I see Bowflex's, treadmills, you name it. One thing that these infomercials don't tell you is that these apparatuses and this equipment do not make you do the work. It doesn't come over to you when you're sitting on the couch; watching TV, slap you in the head and say, "Hey! Johnny! It's time to work out, and if you don't, Iâ??m gonna keep slapping' you in the back of the head until you mount me or get on me!" Sometimes you kind of wish your girlfriend would say that!

Here is the kicker. We buy these things, thinking that we're going to use them. We have all of these great intentions about using this equipment. But, what do we do? We don't put them in our bedrooms, or in our living rooms where we have to see them everyday. If you saw them everyday, you might think 'ya know, I should get on this thing while I'm watching TV.' No, We don't do that. We put them in the basement. We put all this equipment and apparatuses in the basement or the garage and when you go down there it tends to make us think of punishment or that the basement is a dungeon. We have to go down into the dungeon to work out and there is a constant negative connotation with going down into the basement or dungeon. I'm not saying donâ??t buy it, well maybe I am, but if you're compelled to buy this stuff, then go ahead and buy it! But, if you put it in the basement you might as well just start hanging your dresses and your coats on it the second that you get it because that where it's gonna be in about 6 months. So, if you're buying a treadmill, Boflex, whatever, put it somewhere where you can be reminded that you need to be using that. I know that if you put it in the basement, you will actually avoid going down to the basement because you don't want to see that thing that you've just spent $1500/$2000 wasting away and that's where we also tend to find guilt and then we feel bad and get depressed about it. It just becomes a vicious cycle. So, let's think about the next time we look that infomercial and it's only four payments of $259.95.

Just because you show up to the game...

It's been killing me to watch all the effort put out by fat people to not put any effort out. Just because you show up for the game doen't mean you're going to win. The same thing goes for you at the gym. Too many people go to the gym just to say the go. Very little effort is actually put forth to acheive their fitness goals. The key part of the word workout is "work", which in my book is strenuous physical activity, were the body feels like it's been exhausted. Kind of like a hard day at work.

French Women Don't Get Fat! Neither should American Woman

I read an article today by an idiot named Susan Sprano a journalist for The Seattle Times. The article is about a new book called
"French Woman Don't Get Fat", (it's actually a very good book even though I don't like French people). The reporter goes on to say that Americans are fat because of low income and low cost food options. This is were the idiot part comes in. When you buy fresh produce, vegetables, poultry and fish it isn't that expensive. It's actually more expensive per day to buy fast food. I can't stand when repoters use there reporting power to make excuses for why we can't keep our weight down. Susan quit making excuses and take the time to do real research and you'll see that getting in the ritual of shopping and eating better will be more satisfying and less weighty.

When did we become so stupid?

Is it me or did my generation lose it's mind in the eighties. I guess it must have been all the partying we did. We knew how to eat right back then now our kids are going to school and it seems like we forgot what we learned in Home Economics & Health class. Besides learning that men and women have different parts, we learned how to eat and what was good and what was bad to eat. Have ou brains gotten soft with age? Aren't we supposed to get smarter as we get older? Parents of the eighties get a f***in grip. The food pyrimid is still a good thing and let's get back to cooking for our kids. I have been training Twenty something girls and guys for sometime now and guess what? The crop we have now can not cook for themselves, they eat like shit and it's our responsibility to teach them to fend for themselves. Whatever happened to eating together as a family are we that disconnected. Can we get back to basics?

There is no "FAT" gene.

What the hell is wrong with people? When are researchers going to stop wasting our hard earned money on stupid and ridiculous research on mice and other animals trying to find a "FAT" gene. Yes, there may be people out there with the propensity to get fat but that doesn't mean that it is the natural course of their life. If you do lean to the thick side then it is your duty to keep the fat off. It may feel like an albatross around your waist but everyone has a cross to bear, your's happens to be fat. Embrace it and take responsibilty for your own health. Stop eating like you were going to the chair and get out and exercise. And if your excuse is that you don't have the time then, O.K., just die then. Or make the time.

Living in Fat America

Everywhere you turn nowadays there's something in the news about obesity. The causes seem to be many but what no one has brought to our attention is that fat is a symptom of America's condition of complacency. Our society has rewarded its people for mediocrity. No one strives for exellence anymore. Just getting by or doing enough to make the grade is what being an American is all about anymore. We're coddled and conditioned to blame everyone else for what we have done to ourselves. Being fat is allowing your self to bask in this mediocrity. If we believe in bringing our "A" game to our daily life there is no room for fat. I don't care what anyone says you can not be fat and happy. Fat always brings you to an unhappy place. Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness, I don't see any reference to fat being part of that mantra. Let's get off of our asses and make America stronger by getting the fat off of our back.

Parents need to learn a lesson.

A friend of mine since high school called me up the other day to ask me a question. He said, Rock I got an askROCCO question for you. Do you take them over the phone or just by e-mail. I told my friend to stop breaking my balls and get on with the question. His question stopped me in my tracks. He asked me what his son who is 11 years old should be doing to gain more muscle, because the kids his age are much heavier and bigger than him. He happens to be tall and thin and a great athlete, but his father is afraid he may get trampled. Which quite possibly could happen. The first thing I told him was to make sure he's eating everything in site. He's obviously growing and most kids ned more fat when their growing than adults. Second, get him doing bodyweight resistence exercise such as Jumping Jacks, Pushups, Pull ups, Squats, and Situps. Contrary to popular belief young kids can do weight bearing exercise, they just can't do crazy powerlifting workouts.

Beauty Queens leave in three weeks.

Anyone who knows me knows that one of the populations I train are beauty queens. There's probably a million jokes you can tell about them but one you can't, is how hard these girls work. When I got started helping these girls I thought most of them were little diva, prima donnas and I wanted nothing to do with them. Five years later I'm still training them but not without some difficulty. There were some who thought they knew it all and when they got to Nationals found out the hard way that they didn't know shit. This years crop of girls have shown that it is tough being a beauty queen. The workouts I give them suck, but they suck it up and realize as in anything you want bad enough it takes a little pain to get there. I am very pround of them and wish them the best of luck. Go Miss Michigan USA, Miss Maine USA and Miss Vermont USA. See you at Nationals!

"FAT actress" Kirstie Alley trying to re-invent herself

Yes, you can find so much humor in fat and fat people, but I think Kirstie is just plain fat and stupid. She refuses to lose the fat so now lets make it alright to be fat as long as we make fun of ourselves. It is not all right to be fat. Actually it's pretty damn stupid, with all the diseases and problems that being fat causes. Hopefully the people in TV land won't get sucked in and make this a big hit. We as Americans need to not find solice in being fat we need to start rebelling against it. Viva! La Revolution! or something like that.

PETA Please shut the F*** up!

PETA is now accusing parents of child abuse if they feed there kids meat. Now, PETA needs to step back and realize that there NAZI style propaganda needs to stop. I love animals and wish there wasn't cruelty towards them. I have beaten up my share of animal abusers. Feeding meat to kids is not child abuse, allowing kids to get fat is. Meat does not cause kids to get fat, overeating does. An over abundance of calories causes fatness. If you ate vegatables by the boatload it would cause you to become fat also. PETA don't use scare tactics to keep people from eating meat. Let's try to get people to move their collective asses and maybe no one would give a rat's ass but you about getting fat because they wouldn't. I know someday some stupid idiot from PETA is going to throw blood at me during one of my seminars and when they do, I'll throw a steak at them. I think that will really gross them out.

I decided to post someone else's comments from askROCCO

Hey Rocco,
I think we touched base much earlier in the year, I was bustin your balls over your XL shirt. Anyways, I just have to respond to this kid from India with "no time" to workout. Either you want it, or you don't. Besides working 50 hours a week at a bank, and I also attend night school full time (4 classes per semester). Basically, I get off work and head to school, then get home about 9pm. Then what? The gym is what, about 3 to 4 nights a week and once on the weekend. I usually workout from 9:30 to 11 or so, then eat and hit the shower. Yea I know it's bad to eat that late at night but I have no problems with weight gain in bad areas, I do enough cardio to combat that. I'm not single either, I have a wife and kid, and ride/race motorcycles on weekends. So, the problem is not enough time.... It's time management and the desire to be in shape. Some people are too lazy to get up off their asses and take a simple walk outside, but they complain of their lovehandles and shortness of breath. It's amazing, you can go just about anywhere and you'll be surrounded by 75% of people that are overweight. Its outrageous. More of them should start listening to you, and start taking action for their own sake.

Emotional Crisis... exercise as a healing opportunity!

I try not to get to personal on this blog because I don't think many people want to delve into my crazy life. But very recently I have been going through a major emotional crisis. One that involves the extreme stress as a result of issues surrounding the self sabotage of my own success. I don't bring this up for anyone to give me pointers or knee jerk psychology, I bring it to your attention because I know first hand how hard it is to create a healthy environment while your engulfed in an unhealthy emotional crisis. The first thing to go is anything that may have a positive influence on your life; people, exercise, descent foods and your spirituality. You tend to isolate yourself in misery and the hole you dug for yourself seems insurmountable. In my own journey I have come to understand that hope only finds itself in the consistancy of a directed well thought out plan. That plan needs to include oxygen replenishment on a daily basis, without exercise we can not allow the body to do what it does best; heal itself and get stronger. Moving your body helps to expell all toxic waste including emotional toxins. It allows the body to begin a healing process and provides the physical support system for emotional healing and the momentum to move forward.

Testosterone Enhancers... good or bad?

Occasionally I will get questions that piss me off and I can't talk about them on the radio or in my weekly column. So I can rant about them here. The question asked, was what did I think of testosterone enhancers? This subject always disturbs me because I can't imagine anyone wanting to screw with the chemistry of there own body. Especially when buying something from a magazine ad with no real research behind it. Most of the stuff that claims it does something in the supplement world, really doesn't. Most of this is sold to 16 year old kids with crazy pipe dreams sold by steriods heads that these kids want to emulate. Usually 16-22 years olds (the targeted demographic) already has enough testosterone flowing through their veins to get them to where they need to be health and fitness wise. Maybe it's me but whatever happened to working hard and eating the calories to build the body you want. Remember something's gotta give when you force a result and adverse symptoms will not be far behind.

Ahhh... Spring is around the corner.

With spring comes the emotional attachment to fat hiding clothes. So afraid are we to begin the digging through of closets for that hot swimsuit or flesh revealing outfit that we only look in the mirror from our neck up. Well, kiddies it's time to change all that and take the first step to getting fit before you realize you can't fit into anything you want to wear. So I have put together a plan of attack for everyone out there. Here it is:

5 Steps to Fitness

1) Create a plan- In your plan, figure out a REAL schedule, not a wishful thinking, I hope I can, if I juggle this or get my mother in law to do that, schedule. A real I will workout Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 5:30 pm schedule. Then figure out where; at home, a gym or a friends house (or if the weather is cooperative; the park). When thats done, pick a non-family member to workout with you, to keep you accountable. This should take all of 15 minutes, so dont put it off because you think doilies under the centerpieces really matter, they dont.

2) Set Goals Goals are things you shoot for, they are not fantasies. Four important things to keep in mind when setting goals are; Make the goals specific, Not, I want to lose weight for my wedding but I will lose 15 pounds of fat or 3 inches in my waist for my wedding. Make sure it is possible to measure your goals, either by yourself, or by a fitness professional. Set big goals. Dont sell yourself short. You can achieve anything you set out to do. Have realistic deadlines. If you think I can lose 30 pounds in 30 days youre dead wrong. 1-2 pounds a week is a good start.

3) Write down your food intake Keeping a journal of what you eat throughout the day is the best way to keep yourself accountable. Most individuals who keep food diaries are likelier to eat healthier and stay the course, than those that dont. If you need a food journal Ill send you one for free, just logon to http://www.cinweekly.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?category=askroccofoodjournal.
I will send one write out to you.

4) Commit to exercise 3 hours a week- I dont care if it is three days for 1 hour per day, or 6 days for 30 minutes, thats for you to decide (remember create a realistic plan). A routine that incorporates resistance training and aerobic exercise will create a symmetrical look for your body. Dont just try to work on your trouble spots, because you will wind up looking out of balance due to overcompensation.

5) Exercise with intensity As with any exercise plan you need to workout, and not just show up. If you can walk or run and hold a conversation with your friend, youre not working out hard enough. If youre waiting more than 15 seconds between sets, youre not working out hard enough. The last 5 repetitions of each set are supposed to burn, and you should need to ask your partner for some help. The higher the intensity, the quicker the results, and the shorter the workouts will have to beefficiency at its best!

Good luck

Oprah, when is too much?

A friend of mine taped the Oprah Winfrey Show for me the other day. It happened to be about something that I've been kind of on the fence about. The show was about addiction to plastic surgery. Now I'm not on the fence about an addiction to plastic surgery, what I'm on the fence about is plastic surgery itself. We as a society have taken way too much for granted and plastic surgery is one of them along with abortion as a means of birth control. Fat people now have a way out; Gastric bypass surgery and skin removal surgery all done in the comfort of an operating room. I have had clients who have lost hundreds of pound of fat by exercising and eating sensibly and had to deal with large amounts of loose skin which looked worse than their fat they had lost. It usually takes up to two years for the skin to return to normal and even then it may not happen. So in that case I'm on the fence, because relying on surgery to look good is still bad. It is your fault you got fat and you need to start taking responsibility for what you have done and not rely on surgeons to fix it for you. If you are fat or obese it is time for you to seek therapy and support to help you overcome whatever is keeping you fat. Understand that fat is not the problem, fat is a symptom of the problem. In order to understand why you get fat you need to smarten up and get to the root of what's causing the problem.

Searching the classifieds.

I'm reading several newspapers today, one being CIN weekly, the one I have The askROCCO column in and I feel compelled to read through the classifieds. I used to always read the classifieds to find out what kind of puppies were for sale or antiques could be a bargain but this time my eyes were drawn to the "Exercise and Sports Equipment" section and not to my surprise there were three Total Gyms for sale right before my very eyes. The captions always get me, here's one of them verbatim: "TOTAL GYM As seen on TV, never used with optionals. $800" Here's something for a treadmill: "TREADMILL 3HP stable, like new, rarely used. bo" You're probably thinking, yea Rocco's off his fuckin rocker now. He's copying classifieds into his blog, he's definitely gone batty. The problem here is why did these people buy this shit in the first place. They never had any real intention on using it. Please, and I mean this from my heart, before you buy anything please consult me or another fitness professional before making that purchase. There are better ways to spend your money than buying something you'll never use and then feeling like an asshole everytime you see it down in the basement when you go for dog food.
Just because you have a credit card doesn't mean you have to use it to buy worthless shit. You can alsways e-mail me at: rocco@askrocco.com

Xenical to be sold over the counter. Holy Shit

Is it my imagination or has the FAT world gone totally crazy? This drug is not working for people who take it by prescription, prescribed by doctors, now it will be destributed by pharmicists who have to consult with the fat person before handing over the pills. Hmmm... call me stupid but who is the only people that are going to make out on this deal? The answer: not the fat people taking it, that's right, the pharmicists. Why do you think they lobbied so hard to get it reclassified. It's a desperate market and fat people will do anything that seems easy to lose the weight. Can we stop relying on pills and maybe get moving a little bit.

Surgery for fat kids. Come on now!

Stop. Please stop! O.K. I can see for the idiotic adults out there that are fat and think that surgery is the way to go may find it as a solution. Kids should never get fat, understand that people. Kids need to be running, jumping, wrestling and climbing trees. Where are the parents allowing this surgery to be performed. The parents are the reason the kids are fat in the first place. I have said this once and I'll say it again. If a child becomes obese the parents should be brought up on abuse charges. It is the responsibility of a parent to monitor a childs eating and activity. If a child does not have activity, find one for them. To let them get fat and then allow a surgeon to cut into them because you as a parent are too fucking lazy to be a parent is outright criminal. Put me in a room with these parents for one minute, pleeease.

When did McDonalds ever say their food was healthy?

Here's an article I read today that states a judge is going to allow an obvious frivolous lawsuit to go forward. I'm pasting the article for your perusal. Here it is:

Lawsuit Over Fast Food and Fat Takes a Step Forward By VOA News
26 January 2005

The McDonald's Corporation will have to answer a lawsuit filed by four New York teenagers who allege the company hid the health risks of hamburgers and Chicken McNuggets.

The suit blames McDonald's for the teenagers' obesity and health problems, and it asks billions of dollars in damages. McDonald's is the world's largest fast-food chain, and company officials have called the lawsuit "frivolous."

A district judge originally dismissed the suit, but an appeals court late Tuesday allowed the case to move forward and cleared the way for the teens to demand that McDonald's turn over documents.

The case was originally filed in 2002, and is the first obesity-related lawsuit against a food company to reach a judge.

Some information for this report provided by Bloomberg, AP, AFP and Reuters.

Can someone cut these lawyers off at the knees. Giving even the slightest bit of time to this stupidity is ludicrious. I hope McDonalds can keep this trial going to make it long and painful for the lawyers and the stupid fat kids and their parents that think they are going to hit the fat lottery. The ever weakening of America'a youth.

The "Cheeseburger" Bill

I can't believe that it's come down to this. Congress has to waste their time creating legislation to stop fat people from suing the food industry. Is it me or haven't Americans known since the 70's that fast food and snacks like cookies are not healthy. I remember for years whenever something was high in caloric content it was always compared to a Big Mac which had somewhere around 800 calories. The statement went something like this " It has twice the calories of a Big Mac" translated, that meant it was twice as bad for you as a Big Mac. This brings me back a few years ago to the crazy guy who sued Kraft foods over the Trans-fat in Oreo cookies. People this is crazy. If you are fat it is through your own making not some fast food or snack company. Get a grip and get off your ass.

Kudos to Kraft Foods

Although I think that Kraft Foods did a disservice to the Food Manufaturers Industry. I believe their heart is in the right place. I have just spent nearly two hours on their website www.kraftfoods.com
and I was blown away. There is too much really cool stuff to talk about in this entry. You really need to go visit it yourself. I'm going to contact the company and see if I can't link to it from www.askrocco.com. The one outstanding part is the daily menu and recipes (of course they're Kraft food recipes) and the ability to store your own information at a click of your mouse. This site can be a very useful tool in the war on obesity. Use it and report back please.

This is out of F@#kin' Control!

I think Kraft foods has done a huge disservice to the food manufacturers industry by agreeing to not advertise less nutritious foods to kids. This is a subject that thoroughly pisses me off. At no time should the Government, Schools, or any other organization take it upon themselves to ban or limit certain foods. The reason why people are fat is because those individuals do not exercise control or restraint in eating foods that are less nutritious. I love Oreo Cookies and have since I was 10 years old before that Chips Ahoy were my favorite. Cookies do not make people fat. Eating out of control and no physical activity makes people fat. There is nothing more fun and delicious than sitting down to an ice cold glass of milk and some Oreo cookies. Parents not food manufacturers are to blame for childhood obesity. If parents would do there job and help educate there children about exercise or maybe when they're playing they're f@#king X-box they would throw them out of the house for a game of Man Hunt or Ring-a-lareo maybe they may obtain the social skills needed to survive in this world and also maintain an adequate weight. If the parent is fat then they must get educated first, change their attitude and then pass that information down to their kids. Fat is not acceptable, I don't care how many associations form to want to make it acceptable. This suggestion will probably never fly but I wish that any parent that let there kid get obese should be brought up on charges for child abuse. Because childhood obesity is a sure sign of poor parenting.

Vh1's Celebrity Fit Club

I just witnessed Vh1's Celebrity Fit Club for the first time and I have to say it seems strange in a good sort of way. It was good to see Celebrities having to be weighed in front of the whole world. Weighing yourself in public can be very humbling and can give you the neccessary slap in the head that you need to acknowledge the fact that you are fat. The personal trainer on the show seemed like he was trying way too hard to be a hardass. Being a hardass should come a little more naturally. I don't know about you but any mental health professional with an English accent grates on my nerves. They sound extremely condesending when asking even the most simple question. All in all though I thought the concept and the content was pretty good. I just wish they would have been able to get Kirstie Alley or Meatloaf or maybe the other fat guy on the Soprano's Steve Schrippa or maybe better Big Pussy (Vincent Pastore) because there's really no big Celebrities on the show. It kind of reminds me of those Celebrity boxing matches. I do look forward to seeing the anguish in the tranformation. Because to lose the fat that some of these people have to, it will take a lot of hard and I mean hard work. Good luck to them.

The Sugar Lobby:Tales from the Crypt

For years the sugar lobby has been crippling America with lies upon lies about their sugar free products that are saturated with sugar. Years ago the FDA make a concession to the food industry that only sucrose or what is table sugar can be called sugar, basically it's the brand name, like Kleenex is to facial tissue. So the sugar industry began it's quest to figure out ways to derive every other sugars known to man into viable sources of sweetening to put into products. Sugar free cookies were now made with fructose or dextrose, both sweeter sugars than sucrose. So Americans thought they were living a healthier life because they weren't eating sugar. Americans consumed these items by the truckload and it started to show. If any one has the balls to say that consuming sugar doesn't make you fat then look at some real statistics. 30 years ago we as Americans consumed on average 6 pounds of sugar per year, which at that time seemed absurd, now 30 years later we consume on average 16 pounds of sugar per year. 16 pounds, holy shit! Sugar is directly related to fat gain because when we eat most sugars insulin is released into the bloodstream which blocks the utilization of fat stores. So the more sugar we take in the less fat we will burn. Almost every food product that is manufactured by man will have obscene amounts of sugar in it no matter what they call it. I have provided you with a list of the different types of sugar out there, so read the labels and don't let the idiots of advertising get the best of you.
Brown sugar
Cane sugar
Carob Powder
Dextrose
Fructose
Honey
Lactose
Corn Syrup
Glucose
High-fructose corn syrup
Maltose
Milk Chocolate
Sucrose
Molasses
Beet sugar
Malto-dextrin

U.S. Goverment Guidelines are good start but still off

After reading about a hundred stories regarding and listening to Tommy Thompson speak about the new Food Guidelines I wondered if they really believed that these guidelines were going to decrease the incidence of obesity. Knowing what to do and actually doing has always been the problem with people becoming fat or obese. The only really good thing I think that came out of these guidelines is that the sugar lobby doesn't seem to have a stranglehold on the government as it did in the past. For years the sugar lobby has found loopholes in advertising to say products were sugar free but were still chock full of sugar by calling it by another name like high fructose corn syrup. All the guidelines in the world won't help us if we don't start believing that we as individuals need to take responsibility and accept that it is going to be hard work ahead of us to get this obesity thing licked. These guidelines will work if their adhered to but there are already companies and agencies and scientists(telling us that sugar doesn't make us fat) trying to put the spin of the findings to help discredit them. Here's a funny thought; lets all just start an exercise program, stop bitching about how we don't have time and make it part of our daily routine, kinda like walking the dog and stop eating food we know is not good for us. Maybe we'll beat this thing yet.

I don't hate fat people. But they are stupid!

Dr. Joan Griffith was expecting teenage patients when she started a clinic for obese children in January.

Soon, though, young children were coming. Then the toddlers. A visit from a 2-year-old who weighed 82 pounds stretched the already-wide boundaries of how bad things could get.

Griffith and her team -- nurse Jessica Richard and nutritionist Starr Gantz -- have seen more than 50 children since the clinic's inception. Now they're looking at expanding their Monday-night clinic to a second day to accommodate more.

It used to be that physicians wouldn't talk to families about weight. If a parent didn't have a problem with her children's size, the doctor-wasn't going to say anything.

But Griffith now feels compelled to say something. The doctor, who spent 23 years in the Air Force, has made this her mission.

To help the children, her team walks a careful line. She has to keep the entire family interested in becoming healthy -- and scolding won't help.

When one patient, a young girl, was sucking down a mega-size blue slushy drink in the waiting room, Dr. G stayed silent. She didn't speak a word even when the girl said "Ahhhhh" with a bright blue tongue as her mother said the family was drinking only low-fat milk and water.

With every new patient, Dr. G goes through an extensive list of questions about what and how the family eats.

And parents -- it's usually mothers who bring their children to the clinic -- know what they're supposed to say. Nearly every person says the family eats skinless chicken breasts that are baked or broiled. They drink low-fat milk. They don't keep snack food in the house.

Dr. G never challenges those statements. The parents' just knowing what to do is at least a start. But changing bad habits means transforming nearly every aspect of the way the families live.

The reaction, Dr. G says, "is like you are asking me to change a lifestyle that I have lived for a long time. It is the lifestyle of many generations of my family."

After all, food is more than mere nourishment. It's a source of comfort, nurturing and love.

Most families celebrate and console with food. It's part of nearly every life event. People bring casseroles when children are born and when somebody dies.

Families fall into a fairly simple pattern of behavior. Kids want something. Parents want to be able to give it them. On top of that, because life is so packed with work, after-school activities or just getting by, families typically eat on the run.

Dr. G, tall and thin, says that if her grandmother were alive, she'd still be intent on feeding her.

"She'd be saying, 'Come here. You're too skinny. You've got to get some meat on your bones.'"

Dr. G's goal is to get her kids to lose enough weight, or simply to stop gaining, so the worst health consequences are kept at bay. That might mean losing as little as 5 percent to 10 percent of a child's weight.

But she continues to be surprised by the condition of some of her patients.

"I saw a patient yesterday who is 394 pounds who is 14 years old."

"She weighs 394 pounds. She's 14. If we are not able to help her, the future is not very bright

I'm not surprised by what is going on with the steady incline on the weight of young people. I totally agree with this article. It is very rare that I do, so when a docter wants to tell me her stories I will listen.

The future is very bright for this person. She is so young and can be rehabilitated from being fat. I am so appaulled that no one has even thought about helping her. An immediate strength training plan and fat loss workout would take care of her self esteem problems. I would be happy to help her with any motivation problems. Call me at 212-729-6531 0r rocco@askrocco.com.

I always feel like I'm shamelessly promoting myself. You want to know something I am because I'm sick of fat people asking me to help them to live a better life. Screw you! A better life is gotten through seeking a better life through fitness and health.

Happy fat people unite, show your solidarity and go screw yourself

I have not seen any plausible argument yet from anyone at the NAAFA that can sway me and anyone that actually lives a fit lifestyle to want to gain 50 lbs and join the fat crowd. Everyone that I know that is fit seems to be much happier than any fat person that I can recollect meeting. I know someone out there will quote some crazy fat person on the Jerry Springer show or Maury Povich that says they're happy being fat or they're sexy at 360 lbs but let me clue you in on to something. Most of those shows are made for the entertainment value of the viewer. I would like to hear from the happy fat people because if you are really happy why the hell would you be spending billions of dollars on stupid diet scams. Save your money and just be happy.

Are you kidding me? The CDC's misquote?

Someone told me that it wasn't nice to pick on fat people because they have problems. Guess what, I know they have problems, they're fat and that's a big problem. Reporters can try all they want to discredit the CDC's misquote of nearly 300,000 deaths that are related to fat or obesity. The fact still remains that I don't give a shit if it is 300,000 or 3 deaths, people are still dying from being fat and that my friends is not a good thing. If you think fat is fabulous or fat is fun not only are you stupid you most probably need profssional help. Fat is not fun, it is not healthy and it sure as hell will get you dead much quicker than you expect. So do me a favor and realize death is death no matter what the actual number is.

Please tell me I didn't see that!

Holy shit, I think I'm going to hit myself in the head with a hammer just to devert the pain I have in in my stomach. I was just on a website called www.fatso.com and knew that I was going to vomit at any minute. First there are 10 or twelve fat asses (literally)on the landing page. Then there is a fat manifesto that of course I had to read. Here it is in it's entirety (I'll probably get sued for this since fat people are looking for anyone to sue now)

"Practice saying the word fat until it feels the same as short, tall, thin, young, or old. Chat with your fat. Give it pet names. Doodle fat on your notepad during meetings: fat, fat, fat, fat, fat. Use it with your parents, with your partner. Let friends in on your secret. Say, "By the way, I'm fat." Not not plump, not bloated. FAT! Combine the word fat with other words in new and unusual ways: beautifully fat, fat and fabulous, fat pride. Use fat in a sentence: "You're looking good, are you getting fat?" "I met a handsome, fat man the other day." "Gee, I wish I could be fat like her." Try out these radical phrases on people you meet and watch their stunned reactions. "

Give your fat a pet name? Get the hell out of here. What's next are you going to put googly eyes and put a hat on your fat. A pet name... please! How about: gross, ugly, f@#kin' disgutin', fuzzy fat-buggy bumbers.

I have never met a fat person that was actually happy and healthy, and I've never in my life heard the phrase come out of any fat person's mouth "Gee, I can't wait to gain fifty pounds. I will feel really great." So listen fat people the world over I'm not going to let you kill yourselves bite by bite, burger by burger, excuse after excuse. Let's stop dieting and let's start moving. And by moving I mean physical exercise. Also just to let you know you'd be lying to that person you told about "meeting a good looking fat guy the other day" and they would know it.

I don't care what fat people want.

The victimization of fat people has taken on new meaning with this list I came across. It stunned me to believe that fat people want us fit or less fat people to begin to accomodate them because they can't keep their mouths shut for longer than two minutes and refuse to do the work needed to be fit individuals. Here is the list I'll let you comment on this one.

What Do Fat People Want?

WE WANT fat children to grow up safe from ridicule and physical violence. Such hate crimes rob fat children of their self-esteem and their hope for the future. To this end, we want schools, social service agencies, and courts to recognize, and help alleviate, the socially condoned mistreatment of fat children.

WE WANT to be healthy. We also want people to understand that being healthy does not necessarily mean being thin.

WE WANT doctors who focus on our health and well-being, not on weight loss.

WE WANT doctors to stop pushing dangerous treatments: diets, diet pills, liposuction, and weight-loss surgery. As the New England Journal of Medicine said recently, "The cure for obesity [sic] may be worse than the condition."

WE WANT diagnostic equipment that will accommodate us: MRIs, CAT scans, ultrasound machines, some X-ray machines, etc.

WE WANT health insurance companies to stop denying coverage based on weight.

WE WANT surgeons to stop refusing to operate on us unless we lose weight, just because they do not have the skill, the tools, or the technique to work with large bodies. (Ironically, sometimes the only surgery a fat person can obtain is mutilating weight-loss surgery.)

WE WANT the media to stop quoting inaccurate and spurious statistics about fat mortality rates. This practice only reinforces the prejudice we face.

For example, the oft-quoted figure of 300,000 fat-related deaths in America is based on a study (McGinnis and Foege, JAMA, Nov. 10, 1993) that linked these deaths to sedentary lifestyle and poor diet, not to weight!

WE WANT the FDA to test weight-loss drugs thoroughly for safety before approving them for use by millions of consumers who are all-too-eager for a miracle pill, even when it is life-threatening. Beyond that, we question the value or wisdom of seeking medical cures for social problems in the first place.

WE WANT doctors and health professionals to heed the New England Journal of Medicine's January 1, 1998 editorial, "Losing Weight-An Ill-Fated New Year's Resolution," when it says:

"Doctors should do their part to help end discrimination against overweight [sic] people in schools and workplaces. We should also speak out against the public's excessive infatuation with being thin and the extreme, expensive, and potentially dangerous measures taken to attain that goal. Many Americans are sacrificing their appreciation of one of the great pleasure of life--eating--in an attempt to look like our semi-starved celebrities. Countless numbers of our daughters and increasingly many of our sons are suffering immeasurable torment in fruitless weight-loss schemes and scams, and some are losing their lives."

We couldn't have said it better ourselves.

We invite people of good conscience to join with us in decrying the last acceptable prejudice in our culture--the prejudice against fat people. Help us create a world that celebrates diversity of size!

Created by:

FAT!SO?--the zine for people who don't apologize for their size: (800) OH-FATSO

Do you know what I want? I want fat people to shut the F@#k up and start realizing that fat is a problem. I have never in my life seen a drug addict manifesto saying " please Mr. airline man make me a seat to better accomodate my shooting this needle in my arm" or the alcoholic saying "Do me a favor please let my stinking drunk ass lay across three of these seats, I need a nap." If you take up more real estate pay for more real estate. If you want us to accomodate you start paying for it. You can help being fat. Blacks can't help being black, women can't help being women, most handicapped people couldn't help being handicapped. You can do something about your fatness and your health and I don't want to pay for it. And I don't think that you should ask someone else to pay for it either.

Going to extremes

Today I was discussing with a friend why I hate looking like some ultra lean, ripped to shreds, veins coiming out of your finger tips personal trainer. It's because I think it is totally unattainable for today's average person. Most of these trainers that you see on TV workout for at least three to four hours a day. The fitness models you see on the cover of magazines workout all day and have unbeleivable genetics that make him or her perfect for that magazine cover. I get a lot of crap thrown at me for beating up on fat people and I don't really care about it too much. Because I stand by what I say. It is and never will be healthy, pretty or smart to be fat. Everything can be better when you take the pounds off. But, I also believe that going to the other extreme is unrealistic. I will never want to be 10% body fat or run Ironman competitions, because I have better things to do with my time then workout a million hours a day. And the reality is that working out is not my favorite thing in the world. It is a necessary evil. If I want to be healthy, viril and have appropriate self confidence than I need (not want) to workout. I also want to make a point about the crazy world of bodybuilders. The bigger you get the more grotesque you become. Maybe it's me but I don't think that women really like fucking comic book characters.

Dietary supplements to stay away from

The FDA has found it necessary to help the general public sort through the confusion of dietary supplements aimed at fat people. Although it is a good list, when is exercise and the reduction of calories going to become the mainstay for fat reduction. Here's a link to the list just the same.

Honey, do these jeans make me look fat?

You know, for so many years we have been lied to by so many different people and processes and, you know, marketing tends to lie to us just to sell a product and were conditioned to be lied to so we condition ourselves to basically lie to ourselves and somewhere along the line we have lost our integrity, we have lost the perception of honesty or the actuality of honesty and being honest with ourselves. Somewhere along the line we lost the ability to provide truth. And so many times Im made aware of this and, its kind of funny and its kind of sad all in the same breath.

Because, how many times Ive gotten in trouble because I tend to tell the truth. Im not, I dont want to say that I have the greatest of integrity because I have lied, I have done bad things, or whatever. But when it comes to fitness, when it comes to what I know best, I really do tell the truth, and I want the truth to be told. Well, I wasnt the greatest person in relationships. But to point something out, I would always get in trouble. Always, always, always get in trouble with my girl friend every time we went out. Because she would always put something on and tell me, or I mean ask me, Do I look fat? Do I look fat? Does this make me look fat? And I learned not to even answer anymore. But when I did answer I said No, the skirt doesnt make you look fat. Your butt is fat and thats what makes you look fat. Well, obviously if youre a woman you dont want to hear that. And the men out there know that when you say that to a woman, if you dont get slapped in the head well, youre not going to have a good time that night, I can guarantee it. Because shell be saying You think Im fat, you think Im fat, and I cant believe you think Im fat. And you do But I love you anyway. Thats the one thing Well, if you loved me you wouldnt think I was fat.

Here we go. But, I tend to get a little miffed, a little angry at that. When a woman asks me, especially because I am a professional in the fitness business. If you ask me, Do I look fat? Im going to tell you yes or no because that is a yes or no question. Do clothes make you look fat? No, you being fat makes you look fat. And understand it, if youre honest with yourself, if you have the ability to have truth in yourself and respect for yourself. You dont want somebody to lie to you. And you have been lying to yourself for so long. If you gain weight, yes, you look fat. Thats it. No ifs, ands, or butts (no pun intended). How do we get over that? Well, we get fit. Then you dont have to ask that question Do I look fat? because you know in your own mind and you have the self confidence, absolutely you dont look fat, you look hot. And you know when you put the skirt on, you look hot. And you look great and you feel great and youre going to exude all of that happiness and that sexiness because you now know that you dont look fat and you dont need that fake confirmation or that affirmation that Oh honey, no, you look great. All your boyfriend is doing or your husband is doing is enabling you to become fatter. Thats all. Hes an enabler. And thats not what we want. We dont want someone to lie to us to make us feel good for that night. Why not be able to feel good all the time. If you want to go out, if you want to dress up nice, you will always look good, no matter what. If you put a burlap sack on, youre going to look good. Why? Because first youre symmetrical - very important. Youre fit, youre toned, youre back muscles are strong, youre shapely. And theres nothing sexier than someone thats very confident in the way they look.

Was it something I ate?

O.K., I thought I was dreaming so I slapped myself and low and behold, I wasnt! Im at one of my clients offices and right in front of me stood a box as big as a footlocker filled with fried chicken. There must have been 200 pieces of fried chicken in that box. While I being totally grossed out by the whole experience this guy comes over to the box and like he was a human backhoe started piling fried chicken parts on three plates and took them over to his desk. I was kinda stunned at the sight of someone devouring that much food but what stunned me more was what came out of his mouth (and no he didnt throw up or anything) He actually said this, and I still cant believe it. He looks at me and says Rocco, I have no idea why Im so fat I barely eat anything. I gasped and said, Youve got to be kidding his response as serious as a heart attack wasno I really dont eat that much So I went over to the garbage and pick out the bones from the food he just ate. Sixteen I said count them, sixteen pieces of chicken you ate. You just ate for a family of five, holy shit! He didnt realize that he ate that much. He thought I was lying until the rest of his colleagues reassured him I wasnt. He actually thought he didnt eat that much. Its mind boggling that fat people can talk themselves into thinking that they dont eat that much. Heres a clue: you dont get fat from not eating too much.

Pushing Through the Pain

You know what? Pushing through the pain is not some really cool little slogan that I came up with. Pushing through the pain is reality. It is based in reality. We are so quick to go on some crazy diet or some diet that promises fast results, like say drop 32 pounds in 6 weeks or whatever. Well, pushing through the pain is kind of, something similar to an apprenticeship. You canâ??t become a master plumber by just saying â??You know what? I want to be a master plumberâ??. We have to go through an apprenticeship. We have to go through a journeymanship also and then you can take the test to become a master plumber. The same thing happens when youâ??re overweight or when youâ??re out of shape or when youâ??re unfit. We have been taking it easy for so long, And now in order to push through the pain we have to pay our dues. Just like we would pay our dues as an apprentice in plumbing. As we would pay our dues as a journeyman and then when we begin to be a master plumber we still pay our dues but itâ??s more of a maintenance type of thing. Once you pay your dues, once you push through the pain, once you commit yourself to getting through. Most of the time diets and fitness programs donâ??t work because we will not commit and we will not push through the pain. And making, we want to take the easy way but you know what, in fitness there is an apprenticeship. In being fit there is a journeyman time period. And then when we become fit, yes, we are a master of our own body. We have learned how to deal with our body. We know how to be healthy. We understand the consequences of not being healthy. This is probably the most important thing when youâ??re trying to commit yourself to being fit.

Take Responsibility For Your Fat

There is something that has just driven me crazy for a little while here. The reason for starting this Fatblog is to give the American people, and not just fitness people but everyone, the ability to start to take responsibility for themselves and what they do. I have not been able to comprehend the reason behind everyone blaming someone or something else. Theres fat people trying to sue McDonalds for selling hamburgers that taste too good. They want to punish a company for doing what theyre supposed to be doing making a profit and selling food. You know, thats what, that was their vision in their company. To make food that was fast and tasted good. It is our responsibility to not overindulge in eating a Big Mac, a Quarter Pounder, a Whopper, Arbys Roast Beef. Its our responsibility, its not McDonalds. McDonalds should not be saying, or Burger King should not be saying You know what? Youre only supposed to come here once a week and make that your cheat thing. Thats not their responsibility. We dont take responsibility for safety at all. If people took responsibility and put their seat belts on, didnt drive drunk, or wore helmets or had their kids wear helmets when theyre riding bicycles or motorcycles or whatever. If people started to take responsibility. No, we expect someone else to be responsible for our lives. Youre going to start to take responsibility. It is not somebody elses fault that you are fat. Yes, maybe somebody abused you or maybe some tragic thing happened to you in your life. But it isnt somebody elses fault. It is your fault for letting that interrupt your progress, interrupt your growth. We need to take responsibility. Never in my life have I seen People tend to say theyre sorry or they or they seem contrite only when its in their favor or in their benefit to take responsibility. And its never so illustrated more than right now with this whole Pete Rose controversy. Pete Rose did something wrong, lied about it for 14 years and now, because he has a book deal and can make a lot of money and because he wants to be in the Hall of Fame while hes alive so he can make more money without being in the hall of fame or being back in baseball hell make a lot of money because people seem to love Pete Rose. Same thing with Bill Clinton. Clinton lied to our faces on TV that he did not have sex with Monica Lewinski. But after nine months and a whole nation in an uproar and people felt betrayed by their leader, he finally admitted to it. And why? Because it was in his benefit to do that. And we tend to just let it go by the wayside. Ohhhh, you know, its all right. Were so forgiving and were so tolerant we have become intolerant. And we have to put so many restrictions on ourselves because were so tolerant that we will always be put on the slippery slope. It is no ones fault that you are fat. Its no ones fault that you are out of shape. It is no ones fault that you have certain problems or diseases. Youre not willing to move forward. I hope this message, helps you break that pattern. Because breaking the pattern is the most important thing in being able to heal and to move forward and to progress in a better body and in a better life.

How much more evidence do we need? Fat people are stupid.

The excerpt came from a florida newspaper called The Ledger in Lakeland, Florida. Althoug we can't turn the clock back we can sure start doing something about it.

In the past 42 years, Americans have gone from the high side of normal weight to significantly overweight and are approaching the obesity range.

"If you looked at any epidemic -- whether it's influenza or plague from the Middle Ages -- they are not as serious as the epidemic of obesity in the terms of the health impact on our country and our society," said Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the CDC, in a speech this year.

But while being overweight affects health-care costs and increases the risk of some diseases -- including diabetes and cancer -- another recent study found it "disturbing" that "America does not have the aggressive, coordinated national strategy needed to address the obesity crisis -- and that threatens to make the epidemic worse."

The report, "F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies are Failing in America," was released in October by Trust for America's Health, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization working to make disease prevention a national priority.

Nearly two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese, as is one in seven children. "The direct and indirect costs of obesity in America are more than $117 billion per year," the report found. "At current rates, obesity will overtake tobacco use as America's leading health problem and No. 1 killer."

Women Blows Gasket Screaming at Rocco

I had an argument with someone today because they overheard me telling someone else that the title of my new book is going to be Fat people are stupid. She became so incensed and belligerent towards me I thought she was going to blow a gasket. She screamed at me for what felt like ten minutes telling me that I should be a shamed of myself that fat people cant help it. That they have mental issues and that was why no one should pick on them. I told her that there are plenty of therapists out there that specifically deal with the issues surrounding obesity and more than one or two meetings that deal with overeating. All you have to do is want to take the extra fat off. It isnt easy by any means but it can be done. All fat people need to do is get started and not give up and definitely stop whining about how I pick on them.

Fat Falling Off Subway Seat

Iâ??m on the subway today in New York and noticed something that was so disgusting and I canâ??t believe that people will allow themselves to become this obese. A woman was sitting in three of the subway seats and fat from her ass was hanging over the side of the seat. I had to leave the car because I thought I was going to get sick. To add insult to injury her ankles had fat falling around them. If fat people want me to accept this and not speak on it, theyâ??re crazy as well as stupid. Why do we need to be subjected to this? There is no good reason for people to become this obese. What happened to respect in ourselves, have we gotten so out of touch with reality that we can defend this as just another day in New York. I know this is going to piss many people off but too bad. Another thing I noticed that is quite conspicuous is that most homeless people on the subway and city streets arenâ??t fat, how about that. I know Iâ??m going out on a limb but do you think that there is a correlation between the fact that the homeless donâ??t eat as much as the average New Yorker and that they are much thinner? Something to ponder.
